Sounding Time

featuring SofIA

July 16, 8PM at Dorsch Gallery, 151 NW 24th St., Miami, FL 33127

Sounding Time is a sixty-minute-long multimedia production by ensemble SofIA (Sonorities of Interactive Acoustics) that investigates time from sonic, performance and visual perspectives. The performance utilizes devices such as pendulums, hourglasses, analog clocks, metronomes, digital timers and virtually simulated time machines to engage the audience in a unique multimodal experience. Combining state-of-the-art digital processing with low-tech visceral device hacking, SofIA directly engages the audience in an exploration of the numerous ways in which time has been defined and measured—scientifically, culturally, and historically.

“While SofIA's musical blend is as far as you can get from mainstream pop, it felt stimulating and new…their performance proved once more that Miami audiences are ready to accept and enjoy music outside of the usual mainstream flair.” Miami New Times

SofIA is an emerging avant-garde collective of virtuoso performers, composers and computer musicians Paula Matthusen, Spencer Topel and Juraj Kojs. SofIA focuses on explorations of the relationships between performing with the traditional and ethnic instruments, everyday objects, musical toys, hardware devices and computer technologies. Real-time amalgamation of instruments and physical materials with virtual sonic models and high–level signal processing methods make SofIA a unique force on the experimental music scene. Their cross-modal performances often engage sonic, tactile and visual elements. SofIA events are genre-transgressive, frequently morphing elements of polyrhythmic beats with ambient, minimal, noise and experimental electroacoustica.
