In addition to acoustic instruments, music has been created and performed with electronic technologies for the past 70 years. While extension of the contact with the instrument to the digital domain serves as a basis of electro-acoustic music making, complete abandonment of such process entirely redefines the experience. Can one play an instrument that physically does not exist? How does it sound? This program showcases two live acts performing on physical and non-physical music instruments.
Jorge Variego is an Argentinean composer and clarinetist. His set will feature new music for B-flat and bass clarinets with joysticks and computers. Exploration of tension between machine-made sounds and acoustic gestures has generated much excitement about Mr. Variego’s performances. His latest CD (2010, Albany Records) was described as “terrifically interesting”.
Chikashi Miyama is a Japanese composer, performer, sonic artist and digital artist. His performance will showcase music made with physical gestures BUT without any physical instruments. Using his hands and various sensing technologies, Mr. Miyama will produce sonic and video performance that expands the notion of conventional music making.
With the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.
